In a Nov. 7 ceremony at the Alamo, 42 U.S. veterans were the recipients of new Segway PTs donated by Segs4Vets, a disability rights group. The vets sustained severe war injuries while serving our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was the largest Segs4Vets donation to date.

The Segway will improve the mobility of these service members who became permanently disabled because of lost limbs, severe brain and spinal cord injuries, and traumatic burns during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The device, not covered by military medical insurance, gives more mobility to disabled veterans who have difficulty walking. It allows them to perform everyday activities beyond the physical limitations of other mobility devices. Previous recipients use Segways to return to college and easily move between classes across campus, and to accompany their wives and families when shopping and on family outings.

Segs4Vets is a program of Disability Rights Advocates for Technology (DRAFT). It is an all volunteer 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization funded by donations from concerned citizens across the nation. DRAFT was founded by Jerry Kerr and Leonard Timm, two disabled men who use Segways, and Fred Kaplan, to champion the rights of people with disabilities and promote the use of universal design and new technology to improve the quality of their lives.
On Oct. 4, a group of Orange County gliders gathered in Irvine for an After Work Glide & Get Together to support Rideshare Week, a campaign implemented across the U.S. to get people out of their single-occupant cars to try out other ways of getting to work that will be better for our environment and quality of life. That means carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, walking, telecommuting, taking the train, anything at all that will help relieve our congested roadways. Thanks to everyone who participated! It was fun.

One Segway owner shared his Segway story with us and with TV personality Huell Howser, host of California’s Gold, Visiting, and other PBS shows. It’s now featured on our Why I Glide page.

The Silicon Valley Aftershocks and New Zealand Pole Blacks faced off on the polo field in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Sept. 16 for the 2007 Woz Challenge Cup. The Segway match was a highlight of the 23rd annual Polo in the Park charity event, a daylong festival of polo (horseback and Segway), wine tasting, silent and live auctions, a vaulting exhibition, and much more.

On divot-pocked terrain, the U.S. and New Zealand teams demonstrated their prowess on the field despite all the bumping around and speed limiter challenges on the roughed-up grounds. The Kiwis, running on two x2's and three i2's (courtesy of Segway of Oakland), played a tough game but were ultimately defeated 5-0 by the Gen-1-mounted Aftershocks, with Stuart Moore scoring three goals, followed by Jon Bauer and Alex Ko with one goal a piece. Absent from the match was the Woz himself, Steve Wozniak, who was red carpet-bound for the Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.
On August 5, 13 gliders met in Irvine, California, for a group glide through the pretty, rolling terrain of Shady Canyon. On the 11.5-mile scenic loop, we got behind the gates of one of Irvine’s private communities and traveled across a varied landscape of rolling hills, a wilderness preserve, and past one of Irvine’s picturesque community lakes. We capped off the ride with lively conversation and lunch at Ruby’s. Thanks to everyone who participated!
